Arboretum

The dendrological park (from the Greek «dendron» – tree) was founded in 1950 by D.K. Kraynev, who had worked in forestry for 50 years. Under the direction of Dmitriy Karpovich over 200 various species of trees not typical for our climatic zone were brought here from all parts of the world: Amoor cork tree and Japanese Sophora from Eastern Asia, winter plum and red ash from North America, common catalpa and Scandinavian mountain ash from North and Central Europe. The arboretum is split into sectors with plants close in terms of origin and families: sectors of coniferous, beech, maple, nut and leguminous flora.

The area of the arboretum is about 7 hectares.

Each tree growing in the arboretum has a legend or a belief associated with it. Thus, for instance, in Japan, the homeland of maidenhair tree, there is a tradition associated with this tree: on the day of marriage a loving couple plucks a leaf from the tree (resembling a tulip petal in shape), tears it in half, and each of them keeps his/her half all life long as a token of love and devotion.

Dogberry-tree – Satan»s tree. The legend goes that once God gathered the residents of hell and paradise and said: “choose a tree for yourself, whichever you want”. It was early spring, and one of the bushes was in blossoms. Having noticed this, Satan decided that this plant will bear fruit earlier than other plants, so he chose the bush for himself. However, a bitter disappointment was waiting for him: the dogberry-tree»s fruit not only ripened later than other plants (in late October), but also had a sour taste. Since that time people gave to the bush the name of «Satan»s tree».

The Velikoanadolskiy arboretum is the only place where one can see plants, unique on the territory of Ukraine: silver fir, mata bird cherry, canoewood, Siberian pine and etc.
