A glance at the history of tennis - There is no reliable information as to who invented tennis, but according to the most widespread version, the ancestor of the game was Major Walter Wingfield. He invented the game for the entertainment of guests during receptions in his mansion in Wales in 1873 and published the first rules of the game. The basis he used was royal-tennis that had existed for several centuries. It was born in the XII century in France and was popular among the French aristocratic circles up to the time of the Great French Revolution.
For his game Wingfield borrowed both the name and a lot of French words from royal tennis.
- the name tennis (English) originated from French «tenez» and means «take!» With this cry tennis player warns the rival that he is going to serve;
- Racquet (English) originates from French «raquette», which in its turn arose from Arabic 'rakhat' meaning «palm»;
- The counting system in games «15», «30», «40» originated from the French «quinze», «trente», «quarante», which in French pronunciation makes a concordant succession.

In 1874, foreseeing the commercial potential of the game, Wingfield patented it, but eventually he failed to get any benefit from it. Tennis started developing sweepingly in Great Britain and the USA much later.
